Hello everyone! My name is Naomi Andujar. I am currently in the final semester of my senior year in NJCU. I am a Psychology major and am looking to become a counselor in the future. I chose this class because it was a requirement, but I also do think it was the most suitable for my future career. Once I graduate, I would like to work in a school environment and focus on counseling children and adolescents. As a counselor, it is crucial to know and understand the students, so literacy can have a big impact on a child’s life. I currently do not have many hobbies because most of my time is taken by school and work, but whenever I get a chance, I love to read. This alone shows that literacy has impacted my life tremendously.
From a very young age, I have always enjoyed reading. I was born here in the United States, but my parents are from the Dominican Republic. My first language was Spanish, and it is still what is primarily spoken in my household. Due to this my older brother was the one who taught me English. While being 3 years older than me he would be able to go to school and teach me everything he would learn. As a little sister, I always wanted to copy what my brother was doing so that is essentially how I became comfortable reading. Since then, my family has always encouraged me to learn and pushed me to be as knowledgeable as I can be. Once my parents knew how much I enjoyed reading they continued to feed my addiction. They would buy me stacks of books and I would finish them as quickly as I could. I would get home from school, rush through my homework, and grab whatever book I was enjoying at the moment. When I was younger, I loved reading “Junie B. Jones” books, which I was eventually able to pass down to my younger cousin. My cousin was to me what I was to my brother. She now also loves to read, and I love to get her books because I know reading will only benefit her.
Overall as I’ve grown up, I have realized how important literacy truly is. I currently work at a doctor’s office, and I sometimes have had to deal with patients who do not know how to read or write. I always try to be as empathetic and helpful as I can be because I know that not everyone has the chance to get an education. My grandmother never learned how to read or write. My father never got a higher education because he had to work from a young age. I’ve realized the sacrifices that my family has had to make to be able to get me to where I am today. No matter how difficult school may get I will always be appreciative because of this. I hope that we all have a great semester and are able to learn new things together!
